More About Us

Booking for trips
For overnight or longer trips, trampers must book with the leader by the required date. It is not necessary for club members to book for day trips - just arrive at the departure point on the day.
Non-members must book for all trips (including day tramps) so the leader can ensure that the tramp is suitable for them.

Trips Gradings

Our trips are graded as detailed in the following table.
However if you are not sure a trip is suitable for you, please contact the Trip Leader.

Grading Description
A An easy day walk suitable for almost anyone who can walk for 5-6 hours. Possibly some short gentle slopes
B Day Walk Longer & harder, requiring a reasonable level of fitness and involving some uphill work
B Weekend Trip Generally some climbing and requiring sufficient fitness to carry an overnight pack for 5 to 6 hours
C Day Walk A very hard trip and a very long day, requiring excellent fitness.
C Weekend Trip A fairly substantial trip requiring sufficient fitness to carry an overnight pack for 6 - 8 hours and probably climbing for most of the first day.
D A very hard trip requiring excellent fitness, equipment and experience. Solid uphill work on difficult routes.

Mountaineering?
If your interest is more mountaineering than tramping, we recommend you contact the Canterbury Mountaineering Club

Departure points

Please arrive at the meeting place at least 5 minutes before the departure time. Car pooling is organised when the group meets.
For overnight trips, car pooling is organised in advance. Drivers may pick up their passengers enroute and/or we meet at someone’s home where cars may be safely left.

Our annual membership subscription is $25 single or $30 family.

Social Meetings
Meetings are generally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month and are relaxed and friendly. Meetings are an opportunity to meet other members, find out about upcoming tramps and hear what happened on recent tramps.

There may be slide show or we may meet at a restaurant or activity venue.
For meetings held at the Trade Union Centre, this is on the corner of Armagh and Madras St with the entrance at 199 Armagh St. Please be on time as access is restricted and we have someone on the door to let people in until 5 minutes after the meeting starts.

During winter and over December/January, general Club meetings may not be held. Please consult Trip Program for latest schedule.
